EM-based Signal Detection for Space Time Block Coded MIMO-OFDM Systems

In this paper, a signal detection technique based on expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is proposed for space time block coded (STBC) multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. The observed received data is superposition of all the transmitted signals from all users. This superimposed received signals are decomposed into their signal components and then the signal detection is done by using these signal components. Simulation results show that for two users with increasing the number of EM iteration, the bit error rate approaches to zero even when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low. But for three or more users, the bit error rate decreases until the certain number of EM iteration and then it remains almost constant.
