Abstract

This paper proposes a novel approach of genetic algorithms (GAs) based on dynamic search space constraints for the optimization of power system stabilizers (PSSs). When using search spaces with fixed constraints, the evolution of the objective function may slow down or even stabilize before to reach the global optimal solution. Our approach is based on the improvement of the problem’s search space by modifying it when it is necessary. This gives good enhancement in the optimal solution as well as in the convergence. In this study, a GA is implemented and validated for the optimization of PSSs parameters within a multi-machine power system of 16 generators. The obtained results have been evaluated and compared with those obtained by ordinary GAs and those in the literature as well.
