Abstract

The thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) is a series FACTS controller based on thyristor technology. The TCSC is used to modify the impedance of the transmission and distribution lines and thus relieve power congestion. This research studies the application of the TCSC to regulate the load voltage in radial distribution systems during steady state and transient conditions. A systematic approach for designing the TCSC parameters is described which is based on maximum and minimum degree of capacitive compensation and the internal resonance between the reactor and the capacitor of the TCSC. The control system of the TCSC is modelled and simulated using Simulink’SimPowerSystem to validate the operation of the TCSC.
