Abstract

A new CMOS LC voltage-controlled oscillator design using a carbon nanotube bundle wire inductor in the LC tank circuit is presented. The VCO is designed in TSMC 0.18 μm CMOS process. We have applied our recently reported one-dimensional fluid electronic transport model of the carbon nanotube (CNT) bundle interconnect in π model of the on-chip inductor. We have studied the oscillation frequency and phase noise performance of CMOS LC VCO and compared the performance using a Cu wire inductor as a function of quality factor (Q). It is shown that the CMOS LC VCO oscillation frequency is higher for the CNT bundle wire inductors due to high-Q factor. It is also shown that the phase noise performance of VCO designed with the CNT bundle wire inductor is considerably improved due to very high-Q factor of carbon nanotube wires in comparison to that of VCO designed with a conventional Cu wire inductor.
