Abstract

A microstrip Yagi array that can achieve a high gain and high front-to-back (F/B) ratio is presented that can be used to beam steering applications. A single driven element array can be transformed into a multiple driven element array to achieve a larger gain at the expense of a slightly reduced F/B ratio. Both of these principles can be used to create a unique “cross-shaped” configuration that can provide 360° coverage through the use of switching devices such as PIN diodes or RF MEMS switches. Thus, this can lead to the development of software controlled beam steering for wireless mesh networking or indoor communications.
