Abstract

The virtue of dynamic source routing heavily relies on route caching at the nodes. Previous studies have shown that outdated cache information can cause performance degradation of Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). Constantly updating route caches could reduce stale caches in mobile nodes. However, the frequent updating of route caches in mobile nodes poses a serious problem which is increasingly high control packet overhead that defeating the purpose of dynamic route caching. In this paper, previous caching techniques are briefly discussed and an improved technique of route caching is proposed namely dynamic caching with clustering coefficient and dynamic route lifetime mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic caching causes a significant performance increase with mobile nodes scattered over a larger area.
