Abstract

We present the performance evaluation of optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) based switching techniques. The generic switching module is based on Fiber Bragg Grating based Encoders/Decoders, and the system is based on two dimensional spectral amplitude coding. We implement both coherent and incoherent OCDMA designs and compare their performance. The OCDMA module can adds multicast and broadcast capabilities to an optical switch, which current switch architectures based on micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) do not exhibit. The performance analysis of two important coding schemes for the incoherent system is presented, along with the performance of walsh codes for coherent OCDMA.
