Abstract

The Transport Control Protocol (TCP) has a poor performance over satellite networks, due to the bit error rate and the long propagation delay in the satellite link. One way to improve its performance is to shield it from the bit errors, using error control schemes in the satellite link. In this paper, we compare, analytically, the throughput of satellite TCP networks considering two different approaches of error control in the data link layer: Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) and Forward Error Correction (FEC). We have considered adaptive and non adaptive error control mechanisms.
