frame interpolation; frame rate up conversion.
The overlapped bi-directional motion compensated frame interpolation (OBMCFI) has already been proved successful in frame rate up conversion. This paper presents a simple and efficient algorithm called the threshold-based OBMCFI as an interpolation engine to take advantage of the OBMCFI while reducing its redundant computation. In addition, the threshold-based OBMCFI utilizes a threshold adaptation mechanism to efficiently distribute the available computational power of the employed device to blocks of interpolated frames. Depending on the motion activity in the sequences, experimental results indicate that the threshold-based approach can uniformly achieve a quality improvement over the original OBMCFI for the same computation.
