In this paper, we introduce a protocol abstraction that reduces the simulation time for Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) based systems by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude compared to existing simulation models. Using this technique, we have managed to simulate 3 hours of SPC-1 [1] compliant traffic in 30 to 300 hours. which makes the simulation a feasible alternative to costly hardware/prototype experiments. This abstraction from the FC-AL protocol, is fully explained in this paper: we describe how the speed up/acceleration is achieved without accuracy penalty through a combination of FC-AL protocol analysis and using the knowledge of the system topology.
