Abstract

The structures of speech menus and their influence on information retrieval time are modeled by ordered trees with weighted edges and a characterization of the optimal speech menus is presented. This characterization enables efficient construction of optimal menu trees. The optimization strategy is to minimize total retrieval time of the whole menus. We show that asymmetrical structures are typical for speech menus. Results of an experiment demonstrating the efficiency of the menu optimization are presented as well.
