Abstract

:This paper offers a brief overview of a UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) physical layer simulator addressing ETSI specifications. Through a program based on Matlab and Simulink we have simulated the behavior of the UMTS physical layer in order to evaluate the BER of the received signal versus the Eb/N of the channel, using different channel models, spreading factors (OVSF codes), transmitter and receiver configurations, and other system characteristics (Doppler, multifading, source speed, …). On the one hand, our results prove theoretical assumptions such as signal reinforcement thanks to spreading codes. On the other hand, some graphics show the effects on the received signal of the implementation of different Rake receivers. The addressed standards from the ETSI are fundamentally the ETSI TS 25.211, ETSI TS 25.212, ETSI TS 25.213 and ETSI TS 25.214 specifications, involving physical layers procedures in UTRA FDD mode. To choose the channel models we have implemented the classical radio channel through different radio propagation models whose main characteristics have been extracted from the annex B of the ETSI TS 25.101 specification, User Equipment (UE) radio transmission and reception (FDD), based on the Technical Report 101.102 of the 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project).
