This paper presents a test retrieval environment, used to investigate the semantic gap between the images and a new kind of signature. The signature is based on a string related to the main direction in a set of image sub-windows. The query response can be selected between perfect match and similarity assessment. Three kinds of tests have been done to analyse three different aspects of the proposed approach: the effectiveness, the syntactic and the semantic value of the proposed signature. The proposed results show the interesting relationship between the symbolic string and the structural content of image.
