Baggage screening, airport, optimization.
Transport operators have a range of options related to selection of baggage screening methods. The selected screening system has to cope with the baggage flow rate and also be able to efficiently detect target products. The range of target products often requires the screening system to contain more than one screening method. This paper explores baggage inspection methods applied at airports and proposes an optimization framework suitable for the selection of baggage screening options The analysis accounts for the range of performance measures such as cost, throughput, efficacy and user preference of the screening system. As a first step of the proposed optimization, a method for determination of the composition of screening systems using the cost minimization approach is described. User perception of the baggage screening options is explored using a field survey.
