Abstract

. In this paper, the method of Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) is applied to a model of the Dinorwig pumped - storage hydroelectric power station. The response of the system with predictive control is compared with the classic PI controller, currently implemented on the system. It is shown that gain scheduled GPC can achieve good control over the operating envelope of the plant. In particular, the GPC algorithm is effective in minimising the undershoot caused by the non-minimum phase plant characteristic. The advantages of using a constrained GPC method are also demonstrated.
