Abstract

This paper describes the rational behind the robucation idea, which is using mobile robots as an intuitive and illustrative means of making (graduate) computer science students familiar with interdisciplinary systems design. Here mobile robots are used rather for motivating the students to tackle hard problems and making aspects like real-time and control demands intuitively transparent, than for building just another mobile robot for itself. To illustrate the robucation idea, a practical course is described which was run according to the robucation concept along with the experiences gained by that. In this case, building robots for an international competition was used as a further means of motivation, and also to make the course more similar to practical projects in that there is a hard deadline and a strong competitive situation.
