Abstract

Cell formation, machine layout design and cell layout design are major phases in the design of cellular manufacturing system (CMS). Cell formation (CF) is the major focus of the existing models which are used to solve CMS problems. Only few studies are considering the design of machine layout and cell layout issues. Simulated annealing (SA) has proved to be very effective in handling a variety of NP-hard problems. In this research work, SA approach is suitably modified to solve the CF, within cell machine layout design and cell layout design issues. The grouping efficiency, grouping efficacy and average cell utilization are used to measure the goodness of the CMS design. The SA was implemented on different benchmark problems collected from various literatures. This SA deals with non-binary data such as operation sequences, processing time, production volume and machine availability. The consistency of the SA is compared with earlier approaches and the results are presented. The proposed algorithm gives better results when compared to the earlier approaches.
