Abstract

Fractional order control allows generalization of the integer order control and leads to extended control capabilities. This paper ap- plies fractional order control to an automated industrial machine – a fish processing machine – and evaluates the performance through physical experimentation. In particular, fractional order control is used in the electro-hydraulic positioning system of the fish pro- cessing machine, which is facilitated by LabVIEW. The parameter tuning of the fractional order controller is carried out to improve the performance. Although the fish processing machine has non- linearities, the control experiments using the prototype machine demonstrate that the position control of the cutter assembly of the machine can be accurately carried out through fractional order con- trol. The results from experimentation demonstrate that fractional order control can be effective in the control of industrial machinery and can be superior to the traditional PID control.
