Abstract

This article investigated the use of energy coupling devices to formulate a virtual power plant (VPP) to support the mitigation of wind curtailment in the power system. An electric boiler with heat storage (EBHS) was considered as an energy coupling device which couples the electricity and heating energy, which is flexible to regulate the power consumption according to power system needs. A model depicting the thermodynamic constraints of EBHS and the control strategy was developed to explore the benefits of the flexibility of EBHS. A VPP is formulated by developing a coordinated control strategy of the EBHS and a combined heat and power plant to increase the utilization of wind generation. Simulation was carried out and results were analysed to verify the benefits of the VPP in terms of mitigating the wind curtailment.
