Abstract

This paper presents a designing procedure for reaction wheels (RWs) used in attitude control of an air-bearing simulator. The presented approach is a refined version of the satellite’s RW designing procedure for an air-bearing simulator, which results from significant differences between the natures of disturbance torques in these two systems. The aerodynamic torque and the weight torque caused by the distance between the centre of the mass and the centre of rotation of the air-bearing are the essential disturbances on the sizing of the RWs. Furthermore, fairly complete models of the simulator and the RWs are developed to facilitate the system verifying and development. The designing process and the developed models are implemented and verified practically for a typical air- bearing simulator. The results of the attitude control tests show the superiority of the RW designing procedure for the air-bearing simulators. Also, the results show that the models have enough accuracy to be used for future implementation of attitude control algorithms and analysis of the simulator behaviour.
