Bidirectional-blocking-bidirectional-conducting switch, cascaded inverter
A new topology for a cascaded multilevel inverter (MLI) depending upon a bidirectional-blocking-bidirectional-conducting switch is presented in this paper. A deduction in the cascaded H-bridge inverter switch count of seven against eight compared to a conventional MLI and two dc supplies constitutes the proposed five-level inverter (including negative voltage levels). Validation of the results by simulation utilizing PSIM software has been carried out. Experimental verification of the same using the Spartan 3AN XC3S1400AN4FG676C field programmable gate array (FPGA) kit has also been conducted. Even though the topology has a higher count of switches compared to emerging topologies, the same can be configured in asymmetric cascade mode and H-bridge switches can be operated at line frequency.
