Abstract

A fifteen-level reduced switched converter (FLRSC) is proposed for the solar photovoltaic (PV) grid-tied system (GTS). The major advantage of this system is that it has eight active insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches to generate a fifteen-level output for the GTS. A switching frequency of 900 Hz is used, which is quite low and in turn, helps in reducing losses. From the efficiency point of view and the high-power conversion point of view from DC to AC grid side, it is the viable option for the single-phase GTS. An improved model predictive control (MPC) had been incorporated to enhance the performance of the system in terms of computational burden and minimization in grid current total harmonic distortion (THD). The system is integrated using three DC sources at its asymmetric voltage values to generate the fifteen-level output voltage. The power is fed to the grid. Here the power quality is seen within the limit of IEEE-519 standard. Moreover, the system is designed for 8.4 kW, which is under the limit of IEC 61727 standard. Experimental validation for the proposed topology is done at various states including steady state and dynamic conditions.
