Abstract

Seismic performance evaluation of electrical substation equipment is very important to be installed in the earthquake-prone areas, as continuity in power supply has to be ensured. This paper presents the methodology developed for seismic qualification of in-house developed gas insulated switchgear (GIS) rated for 420 kV voltage class using the finite element method (FEM) as per IEC 67721-300. The numerical model has been developed for each phase of the gas insulated switchgear including supporting structure and the same are discussed in detail in this paper. The modal analysis of the gas insulated equipment facilitated the development of the necessary supporting structures for the assembly with a required natural frequency as per the relevant standard. The system responses in terms of stresses and deflections have been determined through the response spectrum analysis, which shows that both quantities are well within the allowable limits.
