In this paper, a control strategy by support vector machines (SVM) for a marine current turbine (MCT) is proposed. It aims at operating the tidal conversion system perfectly so that it can extract the available maximum power in water flow, and also the system should be stabilised by this control when the water current is turbulent. The SVM’s role is identifying the behaviours of optimal electromagnetic torque with respect to water current speed changing. Therefore, data should be collected first. The water current speeds and the matching optimal torques are among the data. SVM model may be designed through by using these data. Yet, the SVM model ought to be used correctly through providing us optimal electromagnetic torque for becoming a tidal system controller. To show the extent of reliability compared with other controllers in the literature, the method what is called sliding mode control is proposed. The latter is going to be designed and applied for comparing it with SVM. Finally, the two methods (SVM and SMC) are testified on real water current profile.
