Abstract

The effort presented in this paper employs the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) to achieve optimal controllers of a non-linear single- machine-infinite bus (SMIB) system equipped with both thyristor- controlled series compensator (TCSC) and power system stabiliser (PSS). The algorithm is employed to tune the parameters of the PSS and TCSC controllers simultaneously in the optimization problem. Results of simulations will disclose that the optimal coordinated GSA-based controllers are robust and notably stabilise the SMIB system and powerfully dampen low frequency oscillations under hard disturbances. Simulation results will also demonstrate that the optimal parameters of controllers achieved using the GSA algorithm are superior to the optimal controllers obtained using two frequently used global optimisers: the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the genetic algorithm (GA).
