EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF PLANT DISEASE VIA NIR SPECTROSCOPY: A STUDY IN BURSAPHELENCHUS XYLOPHILUS DISEASE

Abstract

Given the extremely high mortality rate of pine trees and the short life cycle of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the prevention of B. xylophilus disease has become a difficult challenge among forestry authorities. Therapeutic methods and preparations to treat B. xylophilus disease have been developed successfully. However, the lack of early diagnostic methods could hinder the wide application of these therapeutic methods and preparations. In this research, the near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Pinus massoniana samples with different inoculation times of B. xylophilus disease were obtained. Combined with spectral data and pattern recognition algorithm, the early diagnostic method for B. xylophilus disease was developed. Results indicated the great potential application of NIR spectroscopy technology in the early diagnosis of B. xylophilus disease. With this development, B. xylophilus disease can be predicted approximately 10 days after inoculation, providing the possibility for its early diagnosis and cure. Moreover, this research will, to some extent, provide reference in protecting valuable forest resources and promoting forestry production with high efficiency.
