Abstract

This paper discusses the optimization of the internal grid topology of wind farms using the genetic algorithm (GA). The methodology proposes to find the best electric internal grid topology, whereas the location of wind turbines is already defined. The objective function applied in the GA considers investment cost, comprising materials, acquisition cost and construction cost, and the value of the active power losses. In the optimization process, a solution to the electrical distribution grid of the wind farm is found that minimizes the objective function. In this process, the requirements of radiality and connectivity of the network are fulfilled in addition to the criteria of maximum capacity allowable current conduction and the maximum allowable voltage regulation in the cables. Also, a methodology for optimal cable sizing is included. The results represent the grid topology of the most economical solution to each case and the costs involved. Inclusion of the optimal cable methodology in the calculation also gives promising results.
