Abstract

This paper presents an innovative design method for an intelligent controller, which is applied for suppression of unstable chatter vibration in a turning operation. The control set includes a smart sensor and actuator made from piezoelectric material. A generalized format of the controller is considered, and a structured artificial immune system (AIS) tool is proposed to concurrently optimize both topology and size of the system. The role of the overall controlling set is to modify the machining stability lobe diagrams, to move the operating point (i.e., specific spindle speed and depth of cut) of machining from an unstable area into a stable one. The capability of the developed controller is demonstrated using a case study. The results from the controlled system are compared with those of the original system, with respect to the stability lobe and the time-domain tool vibration diagrams.
