Abstract

The gender and age of healthy subjects has a considerable impact on gait parameters. The aim of this research is to establish how gait variability is affected by these two parameters. Gait variability was calculated from gait parameters during treadmill walking consisting of more than 400 gait cycles at 40 healthy elderly and 40 healthy young subjects. The variability of spatial-temporal parameters was characterized by a coefficient of variance (CV), and the variability of angular parameters by a mean coefficient of variance (MeanCV). It can be stated on the basis of our research, both as regards elderly and young subjects, that women s joint flexibility and motion repetition accuracy are better than those of men, meaning that they adapt more flexibly to changes in the environment. At elderly men and elderly women, both the CV of spatial-temporal parameters and the MeanCV of angular parameters are higher than the values calculated for younger healthy subjects. A presumable reason for this is that young healthy subjects have better vestibular and sensomotor functions than elderly subjects.
