Abstract

Detection and classification of heart beats in EKG signals are important problems in biomedical engineering. Whilst classification is dependent upon detection, it is traditionally regarded as a separate task. Hence, the literature consid ers each task in isolation and places little emphasis upon re-use of information collected. This paper examines exist ing methods of detection and classification, and suggests a novel technique where the method of collecting classifica tion data is a generalisation of that used to collect the detec tion data. Such optimisation has the potential to reduce the processor load and is important for real-time applications.
