Wind is becoming an increasingly important source of energy for countries that ratify to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and mitigate the effects of global warming. However, achieving maximum return on investment in wind farms is affected by inter-related stakeholders’ requirements as well as technical issues associated with the assets. These issues require a well-founded asset management (AM) framework to deal with the inter-related complexities. Such a framework does not currently exist but, drawing from processes, tools and techniques of AM in other industries, a structured model for AM in the wind industry is developed to coherently harness and rationalise the inherently conflicting stakeholders’ requirements and to ensure assets remain in a satisfactory condition over the life cycle of wind farms. The model consists of six processes which are explained in detail with a discussion of its practical implementation.
