Abstract

Phytoplankton are the base of the marine food web as the critical primary producers, with diatoms the critical group of phytoplankton algae as they make up 60% of the biomass of the world’s primary production. N, P and DSi are all essential for diatom growth and development, but there is evidence of worldwide increasing N and P loads deposited by rivers and estuaries and coastal zones while Di loads are diminishing. Low or depleted concentrations of DSi result in lower volumes of diatoms thus allowing other phytoplankton species to bloom in their place. This study uses ordinary least squares and maximum likelihood regression to analyze the determinants of silicate concentration levels and silicate flux in the lower Yangtze River.
