Abstract

The reasons for the development of a plasma start-up system for the ignition and stabilization of a pulverized coal flame in coal- fired steam boilers are presented in this paper. The principle of the pulverized coal-plasma burner operation and the influence of plasma on the ignition process of the pulverized fuel flame and its stabilization are described. The advantages resulting from the plasma start-up system application, including the possibility of limiting pollutant emissions to the atmosphere, are reported. Results from laboratory studies on the influence of the fuels (lignite, bituminous coal, wood and carbonaceous shale) and their properties on the operation range of the plasma assisted pulverized coal burner are described.
