Abstract

This paper reviews the present status and future prospects of inter- national interconnections, infrastructure, electricity exchanges, and deregulation in Africa and the Gulf States. These are considered from the viewpoint of generation and transmission system develop- ment, development of a competitive market for regional electricity cross-border trading, status of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Electricity Grid System interconnection, and international intercon- nections in North Africa. In particular, the author examines the case of the Southern Africa Power Pool in developing a competitive market for regional electricity cross-border trading; GCC Electricity Grid System interconnections; and economic benefits and strategic new international transmission in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and North Africa.
