SMALL-SIGNAL STABILITY ASSESSMENT OF IRAQI NATIONAL GRID

Abstract

The Iraqi national grid has suffered from low frequency oscillations (LFOs) phenomena, which prevented the grid from being fully utilized. A multivariable, centralized controller based on poleassignment algorithm was suggested to improve small-signal stability, using a single power plant (Hartha) as a control base. The controller operates in a way that all parallel-connected areas in a plant can be acted upon at the same time in a coordinated way. A technique to reduce the order of state space using the principle of participation factors is presented in this paper together with a methodology for damping LFO. Simulation results show that all unstable modes can be damped and reach their desired steady-state conditions in practically accepted time.
