Abstract

This paper suggests a quantitative estimate of reliability of a thermal power plant system based on graph theoretical methodology. To find the reliability of such a large and complex system, various critical subsystems, paths, and loops of subsystems and/or related invariants that can be considered possible candidates for reliability measures of the system are identified. Graphical and mathematical models of the system in terms of reliability digraph and reliability matrix are developed using graph theory and matrix method. The quantitative measure of reliability is obtained in terms of reliability index. Reliability index is determined by substituting the reliability values of the subsystems/components and their interconnectivities in the reliability variable permanent function. The reliability index aids in the identification of an optimum structure of the system based on reliability and also helps in system identification, analysis, and comparison. The methodology is illustrated with an example of an oil supply system for journal bearing of a thermal power plant.
