Abstract

This study reveals the complete dual characteristic between Gto- thyristor Controlled Series Compensation (GCSC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation (TCSC). The GCSC will satisfy the need of controllable series compensation better than TCSC method. Furthermore, the study shows the capability of damping sub-synchronous resonance phenomena and suppressing power flow vibration using GCSC is stronger than using TCSC. The conclusion shows that the inherent complexity needed to control TCSC will be higher than to control GCSC; and the implementation costs of GCSC will be less than for TCSC, because the stresses of voltage and current sustained on GCSC elements are lower than in TCSC.
