Abstract

A common practice in present-day thermal power stations is to use natural gas from multiple gas fields so as to improve the reliability of service in case of a shortage from any of the gas sources. This has added another level of complexity to the already dynamic nature of fuel cost characteristics of thermal units. Presently the dynamicity caused by variations in the fuel cost and transportation charges or taxes is taken care of in the central dispatch office. The case mentioned above is special in the sense that the selection of fuel from a particular gas field is the responsibility of the engineer in charge of the thermal power station, and not the central dispatch office. The more dynamic nature of this case demands that the fresh fuel cost characteristics be determined in the thermal stations at every fuel change and be transmitted to the central dispatch office. This research describes a novel technique for deriving the fuel cost characteristics of thermal units in a power station and passing them to the central dispatch office on demand. It is hoped that this technique may considerably heighten the economic benefits.
