Abstract

Deregulation along with restructuring has brought about consid- erable changes in power systems operations. Present day power system analysis is much different than what it was earlier due to the interconnection of bulk power systems. All this, coupled with economic pressures, has made the power system an increasingly complex network that operates under stressed conditions, close to stability limits. Thus voltage stability analysis of power systems has acquired predominant importance. This paper presents a method to assess the state of a system after a line outage, from the viewpoint of voltage stability. Its unique feature is that it does not use any online load flow calculation at all. The concept of maximum power transfer at a node is used. This makes the method highly efficient in terms of computation time. Results are obtained for four test systems, and a comparison with the load flow calculations shows that the method is reasonably accurate.
