Abstract

This paper represents a study of adaptability at runtime in the domain of middleware services. Middleware is the software layer between the operating system – including the basic communication protocols – and the distributed applications that interact via the network. The paper analyses advantages and drawbacks of two modelling approaches that may be considered in quality analysis at the architectural level of a run-time adaptation. The role of this study is to provide a knowledge base of the middleware services domain such that to perform a more comprehensive analysis of adaptability at the architecture level. In this way the experts’ knowledge could be better structured and used in a more systematic way to generate scenarios associated to this important quality attribute of the middleware services domain.
