Abstract

In order to solve the problem of poor matching effect between the length of a single-opening left-turn lane and traffic demand, aiming at the traffic organisation mode of double contraflow left-turn lanes at intersections, this paper discusses the setting conditions and traffic flow rules of double contraflow left-turn lanes and gives corresponding signal control phase schemes. Through on-site investigations, this paper analyses the possible problems of double contraflow left-turn in the engineering application and puts forward corresponding improvement measures. Meanwhile, an optimisation method is proposed to provide a basis for determining the length of contraflow left-turn lanes and pre-signal exits in double-opening left- turn intersections. In addition, combined with VISSIM simulation, the single/double contraflow left-turn intersections are compared and analysed. The results show little difference in average vehicle delay between the two modes in high traffic flow. As the flow decreases, the average delay of double-exit vehicles is less than that of single-exit vehicles. In low traffic flow, the average vehicle delay of left-turn vehicles is reduced by 28.7%. The double-exit is more efficient and can balance the traffic efficiency during peak and off-peak hours.
