Abstract

In industrial applications, a single-stage boost inverter (SSBI) is advantageous over its two-stage counterpart and is widely employed to interface the typical weak sources (e.g., renewable energy sources) to the grid. Owing to the integral instability and non-linearity associated with the dynamics of SSBI, the control problem is challenging. In this article, an effort has been made to ease out the control challenge by transforming the physical model of an SSBI into a convenient mathematical model. The transformation has been achieved by obtaining a generalized expression for the transfer-function (TF), i.e., the ratio of the output voltage to the duty-cycle in the Laplace domain. To reduce the order of the TF, the order-reduction technique is applied. The reduced second-order TF is introduced for the realization of a practical SSBI, performance parameters of which (system stability, gain margin and phase margin) are further improved by adding a controller to the input of the system. In summary, the present article describes the evolution of a whole new generalized mathematical expression of the TF for an SSBI with a simple switching pattern and desired output responses.
