Abstract

In this article, the linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM) is presented as a viable source of propulsion for advanced electric traction system. This propulsion motor mainly focuses its implementation on mass transit systems, such as metros (EMU), tramways and conventional traction applications. A novel configuration of LSRM is proposed in this article, particularly for the modern railway locomotives, that can deliver higher speed and reliable operation on the existing rail guidance system. The modelling and design of LSRM along with its topological control is included in this article. The proposed configuration is further analysed by using finite element analysis (FEA) to verify the potential of LSRM for propulsion in modern traction applications.
