Abstract

This article presents a comparative study between practical test values and simulation values by two intelligent optimization techniques to minimize the current spikes observed at low-frequency operation of an inverter-fed variable frequency drive motor. A load test is carried out at low frequency on a 550 kW, 3-phase induction motor coupled to a reciprocating pump. The recorded test data of variation of stator current is analysed for current spikes. A combination of simulated annealing (SA) optimization technique and Taguchi’s method is employed to redesign the motor and to minimize the current spikes at low-frequency operation. The motor basic parameters which affect the developed mechanical power and current spikes are optimized by SA technique. The current spikes at low speeds of the motor are also minimized by fine-tuned best values derived from Taguchi method to avoid tripping of the motor due to current spikes and consequent interruption to the dependant process system. Experimental and simulation results are compared for stable operation of the motor.
