Abstract

This paper proposes a less computational based model predictive control (MPC) for a seven-level converter with a less number of active switches. The major advantage of the controller is its computational burden which is less as compared to the conventional MPC that requires cost function and weighting factors and also a proportional integral (PI) controller. Stepwise, the methodology of the proposed controller is explained, which helps in getting the modulator to be compared to the switching carriers for seven-level voltage development. Compared to the PI controller also, the controller is much better as it generates a better modulating signal of high amplitude. Here PV array is connected as a source of the seven-level converter named packed U-cell (PUC7). The second source is one-third of the first DC source voltage. Power is fed from DC to grid side and dynamic performance can be seen, which has been executed with the proposed MPC controller and total harmonic distortion for the converter voltage and grid current can be seen, which is much better with the use of the MPC controller under the limit of IEEE-1547 and IEC-61727 standard.
