Abstract

This paper addresses the state estimation problem for discrete-time linear systems, where sensors and estimators are geographically separated and connected by memoryless, digital communication channels with random time delays. Such channels often induce packet dropout, or out of order too. It is shown in our results that communication constraints have important effects on state estimation of networked control systems. For a given delay distribution, we present an effective encoding and decoding scheme, and derive a necessary and sufficient condition on the delay distribution for observability. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
