Abstract

Inspired by aquatic animals, a novel type of bionic hybrid propeller (BHP) was proposed, which combines the undulation propulsion mode of fish with the jet propulsion mode of jellyfish. In this paper, a three-dimensional computational study was conducted on the BHP to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics in undulation and jet propulsion modes, in which an immersed boundary and lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) was used. The drag and lift coefficient of both propulsion modes were studied and the flow field distribution was revealed. Furthermore, a series of experiments were conducted to verify the simulation results. The experimental results showed that the BHP combines the hydrodynamic characteristics of undulation and jet propulsion modes. This work shows the feasibility and superiority of underwater multipropulsion modes method and builds the foundation for corresponding control method in BHP.
