A 3D Simplified Algorithm to Model the Vaporization in Porous Media

Abstract

A mathematical model of vaporization in undeformable porous media is presented. The model was developed within the context of the simulation of the Radio Frequency Thermal Ablation (RFTA) of liver tissue, and is employed to simulate the outcome of laboratory experiments performed at the Department DICAr at the University of Pavia on homogenized porcine liver in a 3D axisymmetric field. The measured temperatures, electrical impedances and the extension of the thermal lesions are reproduced by the mathematical model, which also provides the evolution of the saturation and pressure field.
