Monitoring the openness of the major temporal arcade (MTA) and how it changes in the presence of plus disease could assist in the detection and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. We present image processing techniques, including Gabor filters and a form of the generalized Hough transform, for the detection and modeling of the MTA via a graphical user interface (GUI). An arcade angle measure was also obtained via the GUI for comparative analysis. Using a database of 19 cases with plus disease and 91 cases with no plus disease, an area under the receiver operating characteristics of Az = 0.70 was obtained using the results of dual-parabolic modeling in diagnosis of plus disease. The arcade angle measure provided similar results.
