Abstract

Aircraft inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure a safe, reliable air transportation system, with education of inspectors being identified as the primary intervention strategy for improving it. For this education to be successful, it is clear that inspectors need tools to help enhance their inspection skills. In response to this need, this paper outlines simulation and visualization inspection tools and environments developed by the Advanced Technology Systems Laboratory at Clemson University to support this function. The subsequent controlled studies conducted reveal transfer effects in improving learning and performance outcomes. The paper describes how these tools have been integrated into the Aircraft Maintenance Curriculum for maximum impact.
